Pets are important members of many households, and the rising cost of pet food can make it difficult for families facing financial challenges to provide for all family members in the household. Food insecurity is a known factor contributing to the rehoming of beloved pets.

The HSHPE Pet Food Bank, soft launched in June 2025 and located at the shelter, offers discreet support to families in need. This is  low-barrier service aimed at providing supplemental food to pet guardians to keep their animals fed through times of hardship, so that animals can stay in the homes of the people who love them.

 

In addition to the onsite pet food bank, HSHPE supplies to three different food banks in the Hastings and Prince Edward districts, to help keep their shelves stocked with necessary supplies for food bank clients. Plans to expand the program through additional partnerships are underway.

 

Availability of pet food depends on donations, and extra pet care supplies are shared with families whenever possible.

This community initiative reflects the compassion at the heart of everything HSHPE does—supporting both ends of the leash by caring for pets and their people alike.
